The weather in Marion County provides many days to enjoy various activities. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 50 degrees. July is hottest month with an average of 82 degrees. Snow is a rarity in Marion County. The location of Marion County offers residents and visitors with plenty of outdoor recreational activities. There are area lakes, campgrounds, trails, playgrounds, pools, hunting sites, ball fields and picnic areas throughout the county.
The Columbia Water Park offers many activities. There is no fee to enter this park. The park boasts a boat launch, nature trail, picnic area, bath house, activity area and allows for canoeing and tubing. There are two large pavilions available at the park for family reunions and special events.
Columbia City Park is located across from Columbia High School. The park is home to a unique breed of white squirrels. Former Governor Hugh White introduced these non-albino squirrels to Columbia over 60 years ago. Friendship Park, located in the Columbia City Park, is yet another unique addition to the area. Volunteers constructed the park in five days with all tools, materials, labor and supplies being donated. This incredible playground was designed to stimulate the imagination as well as promote muscle development. The playground also includes handicap accessible activities and a toddler area. In 2004, a one-mile walking trail will be constructed at the park. This paved trail will be six feet wide - complete with landscaping, lighting and trailside rest areas.
Lake Bill Waller is located seven miles southeast of Columbia. This lake is one of 21 state fishing lakes operated by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and offers over 200 acres of nature. The only boats allowed on the lake are boats that are idle. The lake is known for its trophy-winning bass, but that isn't all you catch! There is also bluegill, catfish and crappie.
Residents and visitors can rough it on Lake Columbia. The lake allows users to enjoy all aspects of outdoor life with its boat launch, campsites and picnic area. Motor craft is allowed on the lake, which means that water activities (such as water skiing and tubing) are allowed. There are also designated areas for residents that enjoy hunting.
The Columbia Exposition Center is a first-class facility that includes modern restrooms, hot and cold showers and an excellent kitchen/dining area. This 100,000-plus square foot facility lies on 40 acres of land, and can accommodate up to 450 recreation vehicle and camper hook-ups (with numerous handicap access features). The heated indoor arena has a dirt base with concrete sidewalks surrounding the arena. The bleachers can comfortably seat 3,200 people. The Exposition Center has hosted many events, including bluegrass festivals, cattle shows, monster truck nationals, pro wrestling, rodeos and much more.
