Healthcare in Oxford

Oxford is blessed to be a regional center for healthcare. It is home to Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi, a 217-bed acute care facility serving the northern third of Mississippi. One of the fastest growing hospitals in the region, Baptist North Mississippi has more than 85 medical and surgical physicians on staff, representing over 30 specialty areas, such as cardiology, radiation oncology and neurosurgery. Open-heart surgery, a sleep disorders center, labor and delivery services and the Baptist HealthPlex are just a few of the many services Baptist North Mississippi offers.

Baptist North Mississippi recently opened the $21 million Baptist Cancer Institute and Diagnostics Center that offers radiation therapy, chemotherapy and advanced diagnostic tools including a PET scanner and an open MRI. The facility recently enjoyed a $37.5 million expansion project that doubled the size of the emergency department, increased the number of surgery suites, created additional patient rooms and improved outpatient services. Since the hospital joined the Baptist Memorial Health Care system in 1989, Baptist has invested over $150 million in capital improvements to the Oxford facility.

Baptist Memorial Hospital

Baptist North Mississippi has earned many accolades including opening the first sleep disorders center in North Mississippi accredited by the American Society of Sleep Medicine. In 2007, BMH-NM ranked number one in Mississippi for overall cardiac services and orthopedic care by HealthGrades, the independent leader in national healthcare rating. Baptist North Mississippi is also ranked in the top five percent in the nation for quality by Joint Commission (2003). BMH-NM is listed among the nation’s top 100 orthopedic hospitals in the “100 Top Hospitals.” Baptist Center for Cancer Care is one of only two facilities accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer—the gold standard in cancer care. The Center for Weight Loss (bariatric surgery program) was named a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. The Acute Rehabilitation Unit holds an accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Baptist Memorial Health Care

With the intention of caring for people close to their homes, the Baptist Memorial Health Care network consists of 14 hospitals; more than 2,500 affiliated physicians; psychiatric care throughout the Mid-South area; minor medical centers and clinics; a chain of surgery, rehabilitation and other outpatient centers; and an education system highlighted by the Baptist College of Health Sciences. Baptist employs approximately 13,000 people and is one of the top-rated integrated healthcare delivery systems in the country, according to the American Hospital Association.

Additionally, the North Mississippi Regional Center offers medical excellence to the Oxford community. Celebrating its 34th anniversary in 2007, NMRC operates under authority of the State Department of Mental Health to provide an array of services to citizens with developmental disabilities in the northern 23 counties of the state.

NMRC was created by state statute in 1968 to offer diagnostic and evaluation services, training, rehabilitation, residential care and research into the causes and treatment of mental retardation and related disabilities. The Center opened in August 1973 and since that day, a steady demand for NMRC services has been matched by generous legislative support and rapid growth.

Today, more than 1,150 employees, representing more than 25 departments, work toward a common goal—the highest level of self-sufficiency and independence possible for each client in his or her most integrated setting. The Center currently provides licensed, 24-hour care to 490 clients at its main Oxford campus and 21 10-bed community homes. The Center also assists more than 1,000 citizens through an array of community-based services including traditional group homes, supported living apartments, case management, work activity/prevocational centers, and its early intervention, day habilitation, and home and community-based waiver programs.

The extensive healthcare community of Oxford also includes a large number of specialized medical services. Some of those areas of expertise include complete dental, chiropractic, pediatric, audiology, physical therapy, pathology, mental health, optometry and rehabilitation services, as well as an independent urgent-care facility. A variety of home health agencies and private-duty nursing facilities are available to meet special needs of the community. Lafayette County also offers a fine selection of nursing homes, retirement homes and communities, and assisted-living facilities.
