Recreation

bike riding

From tennis courts, golf courses and swimming pools to hiking, hunting and fishing, there’s no shortage of recreational activities and venues available to residents and visitors in Oxford and Lafayette County.

Oxford is home to a multi-screen cinema; a skating rink; a bowling alley; fitness clubs; a skate park; several public parks and baseball, softball and soccer fields. Basketball and flag football programs are also among dozens of activities coordinated by the Oxford Park Commission. The University of Mississippi and two local high schools host a variety of athletic programs and spectator events as well.

Lafayette County affords access to two lakes and various waterways suitable for a myriad of activities, including fishing, swimming, boating, windsurfing and canoeing. Picnic and camping areas are also available, and hunting is allowed on private land.

The community demonstrated its commitment to safe, fun recreation for children when thousands of volunteers put their energies into building a state-of-the-art playground complex. The new Community Pathways initiative is creating a series of trails for walking, jogging and bicycling between parks and other points of interest throughout Lafayette County. Additionally, the League of American Bicyclists recently designated Oxford a “Bicycle Friendly Community” at the Bronze level, the only community in the state with such designation.Major Outdoor Activities
