Chamber Chairman of the Board

On behalf of our staff, board and membership, allow me to extend a warm welcome. We are pleased that you have come to visit the L-O-U (Lafayette County, Oxford and the University of Mississippi) community. I think you will find the local charm and charisma hard to resist!

Throughout the year, locals and visitors alike are able to fill their calendars with tons of fun. The year gets started with events such as the Oxford Film Festival, Thacker Mountain Radio Show and the Oxford Conference for the Book. The spring not only brings tulips and warmer days but also the Double Decker Arts Festival and the Ole Miss Red & Blue Weekend. Summer visitors can plan to enjoy the Shakespeare Festival, Faulkner Conference and, of course, our spectacular Fourth of July celebration. Plan a trip for the fall and tailgate with the best of ‘em in the Grove and then head downtown to continue the celebration!

Want art? We’ve got art! Local artists such as Jere Allen, Dick Waterman and many others keep us awed at their talent in our many art galleries around town. Also, with venues such as the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center and the Lyric Theatre, we are pleased to book top-name musical and theatrical performers throughout the year. If you are looking for a literary scene then look no further. Writers such as William Faulkner, John Grisham and Larry Brown have found their niche right here and many others have followed. Also, we are sure to keep your palette full with our array of food choices. We have grub that speaks for itself, from country cooking to fine dining…and let’s not forget the catfish! Oh, and the shopping! Whether it’s fine clothing, antiques or art that you are looking for, you’ll be able to find it here.

Over the years our small-town charm has caught the attention of many travel writers and we have been recognized as one of the best communities in America in which to live and retire. Factors such as state-of-the-art medical services and nationally recognized schools have helped us stay competitive with these growing demands while remaining loyal to our small-town values. And, our future is looking bright. With new business such as Winchester and expanding businesses such as Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi we plan on continuing to meet the needs of our community.

The L-O-U Community is one in which there is something for everyone. This Community Guide and Membership Directory will provide you with all the information you need to get acquainted with our hometown. Don’t hesitate to inquire further with our Chamber office if we can help make your stay more pleasant or if we can answer any questions you may have about our community. Please make yourself at home. I hope that you enjoy your stay, whether it is for a weekend or a lifetime!

Thank you,

Holli Ratcliffe
2012-2013 Chairman of the Board
