
As stated before, Vicksburg’s close proximity to the Mississippi River is key to its economic survival. The city of Vicksburg imports and exports many goods. Its chief products are chemicals, metals and wood materials. Its major crops are soybeans, corn, wheat and cotton. There are more than 50 manufacturing firms in Warren County. They manufacture lighting fixtures, linerboard, petroleum, automotive parts and prefabricated housing.
The Port of Vicksburg has access to one the largest Port Complexes in the world, composed of the Port of South Louisiana and the Port of Greater Baton Rouge. The Port of South Louisiana stretches 54 miles along the river and exports more cargo each year than any other port in North America. At the Port of Vicksburg, within days a product will reach the Port Complex to be shipped. The Port of Vicksburg is a Foreign Trade Zone and has a United States Customs service.
The Ceres Research and Industrial Interplex plans to become one of the Southeast’s major industrial centers. It offers land-based distribution solutions. Ergon Ethanol Incorporated and Bunge Grain have joined to build the biggest ethanol plant in the South. It is in the Vicksburg Industrial Harbor Development. Bunge is the world’s largest processor of oilseeds. The plant claims to create new jobs and increase farm production/income in the future. Along with the Vicksburg Industrial Harbor Development, the E.W. Haining Industrial Center is connected to the Port of Vicksburg and can be reached by the Kansas City Southern Railroad.
