Top-Notch Curriculum
Parents looking for a strong curriculum, top-notch facilities, and quality guidance support will not have to look far in the Crestwood-Sunset Hills area’s education system. Serving the vast majority of this area’s residents is the Lindbergh School District. Lindbergh School District is AAA-rated, has held the “Distinction in Performance Award” for five consecutive years, named one of the top U.S. High Schools by “Newsweek” magazine, is one of only two International Baccalaureate Programs in the entire state of Missouri, and home to two U.S. Blue Ribbon Schools, three Missouri Gold Star Schools, and one National School of Character. The District’s mission is to develop competent and caring graduates through exceptional programs, services and personnel.
The nationally acclaimed Thomas Jefferson School, a small, private, college preparatory school serving grades 7 thru 12, is located in Sunset Hills. 2006 marks Thomas Jefferson School’s 60th year and will be celebrated with many activities. Every aspect of Thomas Jefferson School challenges students not only academically, but focuses on the development of life-long skills and insights that are useful for the rest of their lives. Students come from around the world to study at Thomas Jefferson. The boarding experience, even for local students, is one that encourages independence. The curriculum is intense – strong in math, world literature, writing skills, classical and modern languages, history, and science. TJ students have the highest average SAT scores among all U.S. boarding schools.
Students looking for more of a “hands-on” approach may attend South Technical High School, one of two technical educational schools operated by the Special School District. Since 1967, South Tech has been providing cutting-edge technical and career training to high school students in grades 10 thru 12. Programs are available in 28 different career and technical fields and in both full-day and half-day programs. Approximately 1,100 students are currently enrolled in a broad spectrum of technical fields, from laboratory technologies to computer information systems, and from early childhood careers, cosmetology, health occupations, veterinary technology to carpentry.
On the parochial side there are Catholic, Lutheran, and Christian private schools in the community. Located in Sunset Hills, Life Christian School, serving grades K-12, is fully accredited through the International Christian Accrediting Association (ICAA) and offers cross-over curriculum for parents who choose to home school their children. They are dedicated to developing students to their highest potential in academic performance while upholding their integrity and Christian beliefs.
Higher education options in the Crestwood-Sunset Hills area include St. Louis Community College – the Meramec campus is just minutes away. Created by area voters in 1962, St. Louis Community College is the largest community college system in Missouri with credit enrollment each semester at over 32,000 students. The college offers freshman and sophomore level college transfer, career and developmental programs in business administration, communication arts, fine arts, or complete career training in fields such as architectural technology, horticulture and occupational and physical therapy assistance. In addition, there are many non-credit continuing educations courses. St. Louis Community College offers programs at more than 50 locations.
Other career paths might find students at Vatterott College located in Sunset Hills or ITT Technical Institute, where they can obtain certification or a degree in many fields from business management to HVAC, IT, Medical Assistant and more.
