DeSoto is served by four newspapers and two local radio stations which provide information about regional activities. The city also has two retail shopping centers, five banking facilities, three grocery stores, two automobile dealers, antique and specialty shops and two day spas. For years, DeSoto has been a self-reliant source of commercial shopping. Assisting in the development of DeSoto is the Jefferson County Growth and Development Association and the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce. Both organizations promote residential growth and economic development in our area while providing a positive image of the quality of life in Jefferson County. The City has operated under the City Manager form of government since 1948. DeSoto is the only city in Jefferson County with this form of government and has experienced progressive, professional government services for over 50 years. The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the City. The position reports directly to the five-member City Council and is responsible for oversight of day-to-day operation, supervision of all personnel, policymaking and operational recommendations to the City Council, and preparation of the annual budget. DeSotos healthcare facilities, library, childcare, housing and safety record are among the best anywhere. Upon your first visit to DeSoto you will be greeted with a handshake, a smile and an invitation to make yourself at home.
