The surrounding area provides endless choices all within minutes of DeSoto. Jefferson Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit, community-based hospital with the strength of almost 1,600 employees; more than 200 physicians and specialists; and 250 volunteers. The 250-bed acute care facility features 24-hour emergency room care and a full range of diagnostic, preventive and restorative healthcare services. Since its inception, Jefferson Memorial Hospital has stayed true to its original goal: providing quality health- care at a location convenient to the people living and working in Jefferson County. JMH is committed to remain an independent medical center, which retains its local control and community focus while providing state-of-the-art technology and services. JMH's ability to furnish the same scope of care found in larger cities is strengthened by a dedicated staff of physicians, nurses, volunteers and other professionals, many of who make their home in the area. JMH offers services such as: open heart program; complete inpatient and outpatient surgical services and dedicated surgical intensive care unit; specialized woman and child health services (including a dedicated center for mammography and bone density testing); the JMH Cancer Care Center (combining modern radiation and medical oncology); education and wellness opportunities; occupational medicine; complete rehabilitation services; behavioral health services; and a 24-hour pharmacy. This continuum of care is complemented by outpatient healthcare services at DeSoto Medical Services located at Jefferson Square Shopping Mall. There are over two dozen hospitals that can quickly be reached by the Valley Ambulance District in DeSoto, which travels a 50-mile radius of DeSoto. The district covers a 221 square mile area. Valley Ambulance district has three locations and seven helicopter landing zones. There are 18 full-time paramedics on staff and 13 part-time. A number of quality licensed nursing, assisted living and retirement communities are located in DeSoto. As some of our community grows older, DeSoto is prepared to meet the needs of those residents by providing a comfortable way of life in a variety of living arrangements. Baisch Nursing Center is a 61-bed skilled Medicare/Medicaid and private insurance facility located upon 60 scenic acres on Highway 67. They offer short-term, long-term and respite care. Baisch Nursing Center provides a comfortable, friendly home where good resident care is combined with modern facilities and a highly skilled staff. Hillcrest Nursing Center is a 120-bed skilled nursing facility that accepts Medicare/Medicaid, VA benefits and private pay sources. Hillcrest is situated on a picturesque hilltop surrounded by beautiful countryside. Their mission is to enable residents to recognize and achieve their highest potential after the onset of a disabling disease or the aging process. The Villas is a Medicaid and private pay facility. The Villas is a skilled nursing and assisted living facility with 31 intermediate care beds and 125 residential care beds. Other nursing homes in the community also provide care for the aging. Another example of the volunteer spirit of our community is the DeSoto Senior Citizen Center. Through the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging, the center can provide meals to homebound seniors throughout the community. For those seniors who are more active, the Center can provide entertainment and fellowship at its easily accessible location in Jefferson Square Plaza.
