Berkeley

graphicIn the early 1800’s, Berkeley was a fashionable area because of its large country estates. The center of business was located at Graham Railroad Station at Wabash and Middleway in 1891. By 1910, a flying field opened, located at Frost and Graham Roads and known as Kinloch Field. That was the site of the first flight of a St. Louis built airplane and the first international Air Meet.

The city is over 100 years old. Highway 70 has been built to the South of the City and Highway 170 runs North and South through the center. Berkeley covers 4.9 square miles.

The largest complex was McDonnell Aircraft (now a part of Boeing and is still the largest employer). Bussinesses range from the small shop to Boeing. There are two Industrial Parks, one north of the Lambert International Airport and one to the South and East.

Three major parks and a number of pocket parks provide space and programs for residents . A 4.5 acre fishing lake is for residential use and even hosts fishing contests.

Berkeley has a recreation building which is the site of the Senior Citizen get togethers as well as teen dances, holiday programs and court night.
