Ferguson

graphicIn 1845, Wm. B. Ferguson bought a 177 acre tract and built a log cabin for his new bride. He later enlarged the home into a beautiful frame house. He entered into a contract with the North Missouri Railroad. In that agreement, he donated land for a right of way through his property. The railroad agreed to put up a depot for a Ferguson stop. By 1894, the population reached 1,000 and Ferguson became a 4th class city.

With a population of 22,286, Ferguson is among the larger North County communities. It is situated to the east of Lambert St. Louis International Airport and touches I-270 on the north. The city covers 6.2 square miles and was incorporated in 1894.

Ferguson is the site of the world headquarters of Emerson Electric. In addition to a historic downtown business district, several major national retailers have facilities in the community. These include Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Home Depot, Toys R Us, and Circuit City.

The city has 9,346 housing units, nearly 70 percent owner-occupied. Eleven parks, encompassing 106 acres, offer wide-ranging recreation opportunities for residents.

A comprehensive recreation program is designed for residents of all ages. A community center feasibility study has been recently completed. A new community center is a ballot issue in the year 2000.

Ideally located between three major highways and minutes from Lambert International Airport and the MetroLink light rail system, Ferguson is literally 15 minutes from major business and entertainment centers in Downtown St. Louis, Clayton, St. Charles County and Illinois.

Ferguson is a great place to set down roots, raise a family, meet a good neighbor and enjoy the quality of small town life amidst a thriving metropolis.
