Over 15,000 people
live in Jennings, situated as Ferguson's southeastern neighbor. With a
history dating back to 1839, when James Jennings first purchased land
here, the city officially incorporated in 1946.
Attempting to rejuvenate its commercial standing, several major developments
are in progress. A complete makeover of Northland Shopping Center is taking
place as the area will soon feature new stores and offices.
Another Jennings mall is being replaced. The area will become a residential
community, featuring new single family houses, townhomes, and a neighborhood
commercial area. These "community villages" have become increasingly
popular throughout the country and will enhance the overall appeal of
Jennings.
More developments in the residential sector are occurring. What once had
been a popular drive-in theater now will be the future site of Alexandria
Place, a residential community with a walking trail, park and playground
area, as well as some commercial buildings.
The Jennings Beautification Committee sponsors two award- winning community
gardens and many other public beautification projects. They also hold
concerts in the park, often co-sponsored by the Jennings Neighborhood
Watch.
