St. Peters is the home of the only municipally owned Cultural Arts Center
in the metro area. The Cultural Arts Center attracts exhibitors and
visitors from throughout the metro area. New exhibits are displayed
every month, featuring local, national and international artists. Approximately
33,000 pieces of original artwork have been displayed to date, including
an outdoor sculpture area. In addition to exhibits, the St. Peters Cultural
Arts Center offers programs through art education for all ages and enrichment
opportunities. An average of 60,000 people pass through the doors of
the Cultural Arts Center each year.
In addition to the St. Peters Cultural Arts Center,
St. Charles County has a variety of local agencies
that promote the arts, such as the Dance Company of St. Charles, the
St. Charles Theater Guild, and the St. Charles
County Arts Council, the Oak Leaf Artist Guild.
There
are three St. Charles City-County Library District branches located
in St. Peters. These three branches are open seven days a week, and
offer a variety of special children and adult community services. The
Library District makes available over 800,000 items for checkout or
reference, and through its interlibrary loan service, additional books
are available from throughout the St. Louis Metro Area, the State of
Missouri and even across the United States. In addition, area residents
can take advantage of free Internet access at public terminals located
at the library branches.
Located outside St. Peters City limits, but
within the metropolitan area are the St. Louis
Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the St. Louis
Symphony.

There are several major shopping corridors in St. Peters and the City
serves as a shopping hub to surrounding communities located throughout
St. Charles County. In 1997, retail sales in St. Peters totaled $870,392,222.
The largest shopping center in St. Peters, Mid Rivers Mall, is also
the largest shopping center in St. Charles County. Four major department
stores anchor the mall, which has approximately 130 shops including
a food court, restaurants, and a multi-screen theater. The Mall contains
nearly a million square feet.
Community
Development
The Citys Economic Development Office
focuses on bringing new business and industry to the community, which
adds quality employment opportunities. The Citys strategy is to
encourage balanced growth with particular emphasis on commercial development
along major highway corridors. The Economic Development Office, located
at City Hall, can provide demographic information and traffic counts,
maps, site information, and information on properties for sale or lease
along with quarterly updates on space available. Our Economic Development
staff is always available to personally meet with and respond to the
unique and demanding needs of the business community.

St. Peters is served by three AAA public school districtsFrancis
Howell, Fort Zumwalt, and St. Charles. Francis Howell School District,
which has the longest running year-round school program in the United
States, encompasses approximately 150 square miles in eastern St. Charles
County, with an enrollment of just under 18,000. It is the largest of
the five school districts in the county and is seventh largest in
the state.
Fort Zumwalt School District serves approximately
14,000 students at eleven elementary, three middle,
and two high schools. The district encompasses approximately 136 square
miles in the St. Charles County area.
The
districts roots date to 1807 when an original settler of the area,
Quentin Miller Zumwalt, conducted classes in her log cabin. The Fort
Zumwalt District, unlike the Francis Howell District, conducts classes
on a traditional nine-month schedule.
The St. Charles School District serves over 6,600
students in 11 schools in the St. Peters/St. Charles area. The St. Charles
School District, like Fort Zumwalt, conducts classes on a traditional
nine-month schedule.
St. Charles County Community College has
a campus adjacent to the City limits. The Community College is a public,
2-year college offering more than 60 degree and certificate program
pathways in the arts and sciences as well as in occupational/technical
fields. The college has an open admissions policy
to provide access to all persons who can benefit from quality
educational programs and services.
In addition, the University of Missouri-St. Louis
offers classes at the Community College, and Washington University.
The University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis University are located
a short distance away in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

St. Peters residents have a proud and well-earned reputation for
maintaining good health. However, when medical treatment does become
necessary, many talented professionals with the most modern, state-of-the-art
equipment available are here to help.
BarnesJewish St. Peters Hospital
Barnes-Jewish St Peters Hospital is an acute-care hospital
licensed for 111 beds located on a campus with two professional buildings
housing physicians offices. It has more than 400 physicians on
its medical staff representing some 30 medical and surgical specialties
and subspecialties. The medical facility offers alternative birth units,
24-hour emergency care, full inpatient services, including 24-hour,
physician staffed pediatric, obstetric and intensive care coverage.
St. Joseph Health Center & St. Joseph Hospital
West
St. Joseph Health Center and Hospital West offer general
acute care as well as a variety of education and prevention programs.
Both St. Joseph facilities serve residents of
St. Charles County. St. Joseph Health Center is
a general acute care hospital that provides primary, secondary, and
certain tertiary level services. It offers complete
lines of service in such programs as behavioral medicine and cardiopulmonary,
medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, critical care, gastroenterology,
oncology, and orthopedic services. The St. Joseph
Program, the centers chemical dependency treatment
program, provides comprehensive inpatient, outpatient
and family therapy services. The health center has been designated as
a state trauma center; its neonatal services include
both routine and special care nurseries.
SSM St. Charles Clinic Medical Group
Founded as the St. Charles Clinic in 1947, the SSM St.
Charles Clinic Medical Group now includes 15 locations
in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties and offers primary care
physicians as well as specialists in Cardiology,
ENT/Head & Neck Surgery, Gastroenterology, Ob/Gyn, and General and
Vascular Surgery. Our physicians are on staff at SSM St. Joseph Health
Center and SSM St. Joseph Hospital West.
Unity Health Care Center
Unity Health Care Center is a no appointment necessary,
professional facility, which has an on-site x-ray
and lab facility to aid in making prompt diagnoses. A few of the injuries
and illnesses treated at the Care Center are sprains and fractures,
cuts and lacerations, eye injuries, rashes and
minor burns, cold and flu symptoms, animal and
insect bites. They also offer work and school
physicals.
