With
our ever-growing communities, our traffic concerns are growing as well. The
Missouri Division of Transportation (MoDot) has recently agreed to expand
St. Robert's Missouri Avenue, which is the main feeder into Fort Leonard
Wood, to a six-lane street instead of its current four. They are also
working with Fort Leonard Wood and the City of Waynesville in the construction
of "West Gate" which will hopefully aide in diverting traffic
off of Missouri Avenue and give the people commuting from Waynesville
and nearby Lebanon another way in and out of Fort Leonard Wood.According
to a 1998 MoDot study, approximately 24,558 cars traveled daily on Missouri
Avenue when counted at the corner of Eastlawn Drive where the current
Wal-Mart sits. In 1999, figures were estimated to be up in approximately
the 35,000 per day range! For those requiring air travel, Waynesville's airport is located at Forney Field on Fort Leonard Wood, which is served by Trans World Express (TWA). Other airports include Springfield, Missouri, located 86 miles west of Ft. Leonard Wood; St. Louis, Missouri, 120 miles east of Ft. Leonard Wood; or Kansas City International, 240 miles northwest of Ft. Leonard Wood. Bus travel is accommodated by Greyhound Bus Line and car rental is available by reservation at airports and in the local area.
