over the Fourth of July holidays, when tens of thousands
of people gather for the Lions Club Carnival and Bar-B-Que, and Independence
Day parade. Dont miss the Webster Holiday
Walk and Open House the second week in November. Shoppers take their
lists and check them twice, returning home with
their Christmas shopping complete.
For
those seeking arts and culture, a number of art galleries are located
throughout the community as well as Webster
University. The University is a perfect place to enjoy the arts; the
campus shares space with Opera Theater St. Louis
and the St. Louis Repertory Theater, formerly
known as the Loretto-Hilton Center of the Performing
Arts. In the early 1960s, Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotel fame
generously donated one million dollars to then Webster College in
order to build a cultural center. Today the Rep and its studio theater
are the most popular professional theaters in St. Louis.
Other fine performances are presented by the
Webster Groves Theatre Guild, a community theater dating back almost
100 years. The Shrewsbury City Center is the place to be for theatrical
offerings performed by the "Young People Theater", starring
community members and, at times, local elected officials.
For the best on the big screen, head to Shrewsburys
eight-screen movie theatre located near many popular bars and restaurants.

There
are endless opportunities to become active as a resident
of Webster Groves and its surrounding communities. People of all ages
enjoy the Webster Groves Recreation Complex, an outdoor swimming extravaganza
boasting a lazy river, a crazy slide, a childrens
pool with a play center, and a diving/lap pool used in many local
swim meets. The Complex also houses an indoor ice arena and gymnasium
where expositions and sporting events are held. It is conveniently
located next to the fields and dugouts of Memorial Park. Adjacent
to the complex is the Webster Groves Tennis Center, awarded in 1998
with the "St. Louis Tennis Facility of
the Year" by the St. Louis Tennis Association.
Outdoor
enthusiasts will enjoy Websters 17 neighborhood parks,
160-acres of open green space, and three bird/nature sanctuaries.
Shrewsbury is home to 20 beautiful parks spread out over 44 acres
and offers fantastic baseball and soccer fields. Like Webster Groves,
Shrewsbury recently completed a Parks Master Plan which will update
all of its parks and facilities. Rock Hill has five neighborhood parks
situated on 12 acres.
Learning is always fun at both the Rock Hill and
Webster Groves Public Libraries. Younger residents are sure to enjoy
Websters special childrens library
which features summer reading contests
and storytellers.
Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the areas
close proximity to two private golf coursesAlgonquin
and Westborough Country Clubas well as
numerous public courses.

The
rich history of Webster Groves is sure to delight any tourist. The
famous Hawken House was built in 1857 by Christopher
Miller Hawken for his bride, Mary Ann Kinead Eades. The Hawken family
was renowned for gunsmithing; the famous Hawken rifle graced the hands
of notables such as Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Kit Carson and John
Fremont. The home moved to its present location
in Southwest Park in 1970 in order to preserve
its structure and was formally dedicated and opened to the public
on October 2, 1971. Hawken House is now operated
by the Webster Groves Historical Society as a museum featuring Victorian
furnishings and special exhibits throughout the year.
Hawkens
adjacent facility, the "History Barn," is the perfect place
to hold a wedding ceremony or special celebration. Many residents
would like to see the Barn open in the future for elegant lunches
in conjunction with tours or simply as a lovely spot to enjoy a meal.
Tourists are sure to enjoy the areas fine
architecture and lawns, many decorated with unique sculptural pieces.

Webster
Groves residents take advantage of first-class educational resources
for people of all ages. Knowledgeable, caring teachers, active school
boards, and involved parents work together to provide an academic
environment conducive to learning. Students
are encouraged to work towards their highest potential and to love
and accept themselves and all others. Our goal is to fully prepare
our students for college or the work force, instill in them a sense
of academic responsibility, and to foster a lifelong love of learning.
The Webster Groves School District serves the
educational needs of students from the cities of Glendale, Rock Hill,
Shrewsbury, Warson Woods, and Webster Groves. Kindergarten through
fifth grade students attend either Avery Elementary School, established
in the early 1900s; Bristol Primary & Elementary Schools,
the latter which was organized in 1868 and was Webster Groves
first school; or Clark, Edgar Road, or Hudson Elementary Schools.
Webster Groves Elementary Computer School, whose focus is on using
computers across the curriculum, enrolls students throughout the district
selected by lottery. Established in 1983, Webster Groves Elementary
Computer School was the first public elementary school of its kind
in the country.
Sixth grade students attend Steger Sixth Grade
Center, situated on 18 acres and home to the Elementary Computer School,
which occupies its lower level. Hixson Middle School has been serving
the educational needs of seventh and eighth grade students since 1955,
and is renowned for its innovative instructional programs.
Webster
Groves High School planted its roots in 1889. The school occupied
the first floor of the original Bristol School Building and, following
World War I, moved into the Webster Groves Armory.
Webster Groves High School enrolls over 1,200 students and has been
selected by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
as a tentative A+ school site. As a result, beginning with 2001 graduates,
Webster Groves High School students might be eligible for two years
of free tuition, books, and fees from any Missouri public community
college, vocational school, or technical school. This exciting program
is just one of the ways that Webster Groves High School encourages
higher education and prepares its students for
life after high school.
Nerinx Hall, a Catholic college preparatory high school
for women, boasts a diverse academic curriculum that includes a number
of honors and college credit courses in English, Fine Arts, Foreign
Language, Math, and Social Studies.
The College School nurtures and develops the
unique potential of children (preschool - 8th grade) through hands-on,
thematic education. Graduates leave 8th grade confident of who they
are and what they can do. They become thinkers, problem solvers, and
risk takers. They leave with a love of learning, excitement about
life and self-confidence they will use the rest
of their lives.
A number of preschools, such as Faith Academy Montessori,
as well as day care centers and five parochial schools are also available
to area residents.
Three schools serve children with special needs.
Edgewood Childrens Center is recognized throughout the region
for their care of children who were emotionally
and physically abused.
Higher Education
For those pursuing higher education, St. Louis
Community College at Meramec is located in nearby Kirkwood, and Webster
University lies in the heart of Webster Groves. What is now known
as Webster University was founded in 1915 as Webster College; Webster
College became coeducational in 1967 and adopted the name Webster
University in 1983. The name "Webster University" better
identifies the scope and range of the universitys academic programs,
the growth of its student population, and its commitment to internationalism.
Webster University, whose goal is to become the worlds first
truly international university, now boasts over 70 extended campuses
located in cities and military bases across the United States as well
as seven campuses dispersed throughout Europe and Asia. The University
currently enrolls more than 15,000 students
in the United States and abroad.

Involved
citizens and responsive public servants equal good government. The
citizens of Rock Hill, Shrewsbury, and Webster Groves strongly believe
in participatory democracy. An issue rarely
comes up that does not generate interest, involvement, and action
from residents and businesses. Its the combination of an involved
citizenry and responsive public officials and staff that ensure good
governance.
Webster Groves maintains a City Manager/Council
form of government with a City Manager and seven elected Council members.
Webster Groves is guided by a half-century-old City Charter. The City
has 160 full-time employees and 75 part-time employees who manage
six departments: Finance, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Housing,
Police, and Fire. The City of Webster Groves has many hard-working
department heads and staff who provide everything from housing inspections
to water service.
Shrewsbury
maintains a Mayor/Board of Aldermen form of government with a City
Administrator. Shrewsbury has approximately 60 employees and five
departments: Administration, Parks and Recreation, Police, Fire, and
Public Works.
Rock Hill also maintains a Mayor/Alderperson form
of government with a City Administrator. The City of Rock Hill has
41 employees and five departments: Administration, Public Works, Parks,
Fire, and a Police Department renowned locally
for its Community Oriented Policing Program.
