Dawson County has a diverse and rich economy, with businesses that span the whole range of categories. The downtown Main Street districts feature many historic buildings built in the early 1900s. These buildings are home to numerous retail and specialty shops, as well as to a number of professional service providers. The communities offer a wide variety of retail options for every price range and interest, plenty of parking, conveniently located stores and friendly personalized service. Shopping in the county offers clothing for all ages, floor-to-ceiling home furnishings, gourmet items, jewelry, auto parts, flowers, gifts, antiques and collectibles.
Gothenburg and Lexington are both part of the National Main Street Program promoting historic preservation of their downtown districts to provide a thriving center of trade for their citizens now and in the future.
Lexington has a new Wal-Mart Super Center (opened in 2004) and two strip malls that offer a variety of retailers, service providers and eating establishments. The downtown has a variety of antique, ethnic and gourmet shops.
