The City of Hastings Hastings (www.cityofhastings.org) is a lively and progressive city located in the agricultural heartland of south-central Nebraska. Summers are usually warm and fairly dry with occasional thunderstorms, and winters are cold with a few snowstorms and infrequent blizzards. Founded in 1872, the 25,000+ citizens of Hastings are the driving force behind the activities.

The city operates under a mayor/city administrator government with many boards, both appointed and volunteer.

Hastings Utilities Hastings Utilities (www.hastingsutilities.com) is municipally owned, providing electric, gas, sewer and water to the city and surrounding area. The City of Hastings has a franchise agreement with Charter Communication to provide cable television service.

The city also owns the Hastings Municipal Airport, located in the northwest section of the city offering services including aircraft maintenance, rental and flight instruction. The airport has two lighted runways, provides fuel, hangar rental, pilot supplies and courtesy cars for pilots and passengers.

Fire Department The Hastings Fire Department is an ISO Class 3 Fire Department serving residents since 1878. The fire department operates from two fire stations, Highland Park Station at 1313 North Hastings Avenue and Lincoln Park Station at 1145 South Hastings Avenue. The department employs 24 firefighters and officers who are divided into three 24-hour shifts supplemented by 32 part-time reserve firefighters.

Hastings firefighters all have the required basic certifications and most have specialized training in a variety of areas. The Hastings Fire Department also serves as the regional Hazardous Materials Response Team for the state of Nebraska.

Hastings Police Department The Hastings Police Department is an award-winning agency, providing leadership in the law enforcement response to victims of crime.

Our mission is to pursue excellence by working in concert with effective partnerships within our diverse community to improve the quality of life while providing a safe and clean environment to all of our citizens and visitors.

Our police station is an historic 100-year-old building, the former Lincoln School and St. Michael School. Renovated in 2000, the 42,000-square-foot building houses the police department, a contingent of the Nebraska State Patrol and hosts other law enforcement agency functions. The facility has a classroom, auditorium and gymnasium, which accommodate a variety of community related activities.

The police department consists of two divisions—Operational Services and Administrative Services. The Operation Services Division consists of Patrol and the Detective Bureau. The Administration Services Division consists of the 9-1-1 center, Office of Professional Standards, Community Services Officers, Records and Property Control (both city property and evidence), along with vehicle and building maintenance.

The department has two police canines, which are trained in drug detection and patrol operations. We utilize two police motorcycles, as weather permits, to address high accident areas. We participate in the following: City-County Drug Task Force; the nine-county CANDO (Compact to Arrest Narcotics and Drug Offenders); the federal Tri-Cities HIDT Drug and Safe Streets Task Force; SCALES (South Central Alliance of Law Enforcement Services); the CNRI (Central Nebraska Regional Inter-Operability) project; and many members of the organization participate in local, state and national committees and professional organizations.

In partnership with the Hastings Area YWCA and others, we host “THE ZONE”, an afterschool program for middle school students. The Zone is located in the lower level of the police station and all middle school students are welcome to attend, socialize, do homework, play games, learn skills and crafts or just hang out.
