Good Samaritan also partners with the community to improve the health of people in the region through its state-of-the-art Healthy Living Center. In 2007, Good Samaritan Hospital expanded its NICU into a 10,352-square-foot space on its second floor. The new unit is built around the idea that families whose babies need a higher level of care should have their own private space. That space features nine new “personal NICU” rooms designed to promote a baby’s growth and wellness through special lighting, acoustics and alarm systems that accommodate the unique developmental needs of premature, sick and multiple-birth infants while creating a private bonding space for the family.
Good Samaritan’s Richard H. Young Hospital is an 80-bed behavioral health facility offering inpatient and outpatient hospitalization and treatment for adults and adolescents. A residential treatment center that provides dual-diagnosis treatment on the Richard Young campus also is available for adolescent females. A unique sub-acute care unit is also part of the behavioral health offerings at Richard Young Hospital. Complete acute care and psychiatric counseling services are provided.
Buffalo County is home to Buffalo County Community Partners, a locally driven, nationally leading healthy community initiative. The Partners mission is to assess, strengthen and promote the overall health and well-being of Buffalo County. The county’s top 10 health issues have been identified and are the focus of thousands of volunteers working in partnership to build a healthier place to live by 2010.

Kearney is ideally located in the center of one of the country’s healthiest counties, even having attained a national award in 2000—Well City USA. The Buffalo County/Kearney area was named by America’s Promise Alliance in its first-ever national competition to identify the 100 Best Communities for Young People. The area received the 100 Best honor, in part, due to the volunteer opportunities for youth, mentoring programs, youth leadership programs and youth advocacy initiatives.
