Educational opportunities abound in the Lincoln area with the finest of public school systems, options for excellent parochial and private schooling, vocational and technical training, an outstanding community college, and convenient access to exceptional four-year colleges and universities.

The Lincoln Public Schools system was ranked among the top five in the nation for quality of education by Expansion Management Magazine. Innovative programs within the school system include the Star Lab, a portable planetarium; and Ventures in Partnership, a program that partners schools with businesses and organizations in the community. Focus programs were designed to give students a head start on their careers in Arts & Humanities, Science & Technology and Information Technology.

Founded in 1869, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a research institution focused in humanities and sciences and has been recognized by the legislature as the primary research and doctoral degree granting institution in the state for fields outside of the health profession.

Nebraska Wesleyan University, a liberal arts Christian university, in 2002 was ranked the number one liberal arts college in Nebraska by U.S. News & World Report, due to its small class sizes, competitive student body, and the low student-to-faculty ratio. Wesleyan is also one of only two recipients nationwide of the first annual Heuer Award for outstanding achievement in undergraduate science education.

The Lincoln School of Commerce, one of the oldest private colleges in Nebraska, offers quality programs that integrate general education, professional skills and career-focused education.

More than 5,000 students attend the Lincoln campus of Southeast Community College, whose academic transfer program provides the first two years of a four-year degree. The school's technical programs provide training for careers in electronics, business, microcomputer and manufacturing, to name a few.

Located in southeast Lincoln, Union College is an independent four-year college offering degrees in the liberal arts and sciences.

The College of Saint Mary, founded in 1923, is an accredited institution that offers more than 25 fields of study. It is one of only 77 all-women's colleges in the United States. The College of Saint Mary includes a weekend program for adults who need to balance school with other responsibilities.

Located in downtown Lincoln is a branch of Doane College. The primary campus is approximately 25 miles from Lincoln in the town of Crete. The Lincoln campus offers courses delivered in a format appropriate for working adults. Doane also offers a Master's of Arts in Management at the Lincoln campus.

The Nebraska Institute of Technology is a private, post-secondary college that prepares students for careers in the ever-changing world of technology. The school offers eight diploma programs including Internet System Management and Information Management Systems.
