As the state capital, Lincoln serves as the center of Nebraska government. The State Capitol building is home to the nation's only unicameral legislature as well as the state Supreme Court. The newly renovated Nebraska Governor's Mansion is located just south of the Capitol. In 1998, more than $1 million of private funds were spent to restore the mansion interior to better-than-original beauty.
The major factions of local government are located within the County-City Building. As administrative head of city government, the Mayor works with the seven-member City Council in matters relating to legislation, including the city's annual budget. Nebraska's Governor Mike Johanns is a former City Council member as well as a former Mayor of Lincoln.
Lincoln's city government maintains a premier library system, implements programs to help the city grow–including the new beltway system currently being designed–and runs the city's police, fire and ambulance services.
Primary police services in Lincoln are delivered by over 200 officers assigned to five geographical teams throughout the city. In its efforts to meet the many expectations of our residents, the Lincoln Fire Department has added ambulance transportation services and plans to add more fire stations in newly growing areas of the city. Specialized routes enable ambulances to deliver patients to the many city hospitals quickly and effectively.
