Omaha’s Fortune 500 five

Omaha is home to five Fortune 500 headquarters, a remarkable claim to fame. In the United States, only 13 cities have more Fortune 500 company headquarters.

The five are:
• Berkshire Hathaway, ranked No. 4 on Fortune magazine’s 2007 list of America’s most admired companies, is multi-billionaire Warren Buffett’s success story, with local holdings that include Nebraska Furniture Mart and Borsheims Fine Jewelry.

• ConAgra Foods, whose brands range from Chef Boyardee to Slim Jim, is one of North America’s largest packaged food companies and an anchor in early riverfront development.

• Mutual of Omaha has been a resident since 1909 and is a major influence in Midtown Omaha beautification. In October 2006, the company unveiled plans for a $250 million Midtown Crossing at Turner Park mixed-use development project.

Buffett

• Union Pacific Corp., the largest railroad in North America and another of Fortune’s most admired companies, built on its 145-year history here with a $260 million corporate headquarters building. The railroad serves 23 states linking every major West Coast and Gulf Coast port and is the only railroad to serve all six major gateways to Mexico.

• Peter Kiewit Sons’, Inc., is one of North America’s largest construction and mining organizations. Also named by Fortune as one of America’s most admired companies, Kiewit is consistently ranked among the top 10 contractors by Engineering News Record.
