Entrepreneurship is BIG in Omaha

Entrepreneurship

Thanks to a dynamic entrepreneurial culture and a pool of experienced entrepreneurs, Omaha has consistently created successful growth start-ups for decades.

The Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership has helped establish a number of partnerships, including Cornstalks (Omaha’s entrepreneurs and investors club) and the Midlands Venture Forum.

Silicon Prairie News founders Dusty Davidson and Jeff Slobotski created a unique online outlet that offers a combination of evangelization, information and excitement about the Midwest’s entrepreneurial efforts, www.siliconprairienews.com.

In May, the two went beyond supplying the news to creating it with the Big Omaha Conference. The conference drew national acclaim with well-recognized speakers including Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV and Jason Fried of 37 Signals. People from around the country met to discuss entrepreneurship and the young creative dynamic environments at the KANEKO in the Old Market.

Never Too Young to Start

Ten years ago, two 14-year-olds captured the attention of Microsoft using the software giant’s products. Ten years later, with 17 employees and 250 customers, the Omaha business they founded, JM Web Designs, is being highlighted by Microsoft.

In December 2008, a film crew from Microsoft came to Omaha to showcase the company in a Small Business Solutions Customer Case Study. They competed with thousands of other small businesses throughout the world for this distinction, for which Microsoft selects only two businesses a year.
