The world is rich with stories of the past and diverse cultures – and there are many opportunities to experience these stories without leaving Omaha.
Creighton University’s Lied Art Gallery last fall presented “Rosebud Sioux – A Lakota People in Transition,” an exhibit of photographs by John Anderson and contemporary photographers of the Sicangu Lakota people on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.
“The Rosebud Sioux people have sent students to Creighton for years,” says Teri Dameron, coordinator of Creighton’s Multicultural Student Services. “They’ve had a strong presence in western Nebraska and southwestern South Dakota for centuries. Many Jesuits — Creighton is a Jesuit university — have been assigned to the Rosebud reservation.”
The closing celebration was an exhibit in itself, as the event featured national champion hoop dancer and Lakota flutist Kevin Locke.
Earlier this year, El Museo Latino in South Omaha hosted the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, “Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement.”
Sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund, the bilingual exhibit featured photographs of 24 Latino individuals and one extended family to showcase the contributions these people have made to American life. Subjects of the exhibition’s portraits included astronaut Ellen Ochoa, athlete Rebecca Lobo, artist Pepóón Osorio, labor leader Dolores Huerta and folklorist Teodoro Vidal.
A biographical narrative with excerpts from recent oral history interviews accompanied the portraits. The exhibition also featured traditional Latino sayings, known as “dichos,” that pass knowledge, experience and values from generation to generation.
From March through June, Love’s Jazz & Arts Center in North Omaha hosted “Islands of Spirits, the Art and People of Indonesia.”
The exhibit of tribal artifacts and photographs resulted from 25 years of travel to these remote islands by Lincoln, Neb., collector and educator Dr. Kam Chin Leung.
Exhibits such as these – and the organizations and galleries that sponsor them – regularly bring the world to Omaha’s doorstep.
