Come Hungry

You’d expect the home of Omaha Steaks, Godfather’s Pizza and the Reuben sandwich to be a source of great food, and Greater Omaha doesn’t disappoint. With more than 1,500 restaurants, cafés, buffets and grills in the metro area, there’s really no reason to cook. Or do dishes.

Omaha means great beef, from roast prime rib to filet mignons that cut like butter. But there’s so much more. Our restaurant themes span the globe. Asian, European, Bohemian, French, Greek, Italian, Irish, Mexican, southwestern, Creole, southern, soul food, continental, east Indian, Japanese, even vegetarian. And, yes, seafood so fresh you’d swear it swam off the plane.

Some of the finest chefs reside here, serving up award-winning delicacies from appetizers to pastries. They create their masterpieces in kitchens at hometown favorites like Johnny’s Café, where some of the movie “About Schmidt” was filmed; The French Café, Brother Sebastian’s, Gorat’s Steak House (a favorite of Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett), M’s Pub, Jams Grill, China Road, the Flatiron Café, LaCasa Pizzaria, the Upstream Brewing Company, Blue Sushi Grill, Dunn Deal, Petrow’s Restaurant, Lo Sole Mio, Roja Mexican Grill and Charlie’s on the Lake.

Across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the restaurants at Ameristar, Harrah’s and the Horseshoe casinos are always sure bets. And there are plenty of national chains with familiar names including The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill and P.F. Chang’s China Bistro. The Amazing Pizza Machine is proving a big hit with parents and kids.

Choices in the evenings extend far beyond the menu, from the big screens at sports bars to live games at in Play Omaha and Dave & Buster’s.

Those who move at the speed of night will enjoy Greater Omaha's club scene, live music from jazz and blues to indie rock, and comedy clubs.

The North Downtown mixed-use urban redevelopment area is the home to the new Saddle Creek Records’ music club, Slowdown. Many other area nightspots host live music. Weekend gigs and popular night spots are listed in the Omaha World-Herald newspaper’s online edition under “Today’s Best Bets.” The newspaper print edition features restaurant news and reviews every Friday, and the “go!” pullout entertainment guide every Thursday offers tips about coming attractions and events.

Speaking of tips, don’t forget to leave a little something extra for your servers.
