Metropolitan Community College’s Institute for Culinary Arts is one of only 100 American Culinary Federation accredited programs in the country.

“Omaha has always appreciated good food,” said Jim Trebbien, dean of the institute. “The need for trained people exceeds what we can fulfill right now.”

You could say there is quite a hunger for qualified chefs; experts project 300 new jobs each year.

The new Institute for the Culinary Arts at the college’s Fort Omaha Campus represents a $16 million investment in the redevelopment of North Omaha.

With eight state-of-the-art kitchens and added space, the program now can train up to 1,000 students. Enrollment at the institute has grown steadily over the last decade and is projected to continue.

The $1 million Merle and Joy Swanson Conference Center on the second floor of the new building is a multi-purpose facility named in recognition of the gift from the Merle and Joy Swanson Fund through the Omaha Community Foundation.

Library

The Omaha Public Library is celebrating the launch of its newest $16 million location in northwest Omaha. Its 13,000 square feet of books, resources and meeting space opened in late August. The Saddlebrook Library is part of the new Saddlebrook Joint Facility, a three-in-one building also housing an Omaha Public Schools’ elementary school with room for up to 700 students, and an Omaha Parks and Recreation Department community center.

The Saddlebrook Library includes a computer lab, a community meeting room, a teen space and a children’s area.

The $6.7 million South Omaha Library, built last year in cooperation with Metropolitan Community College (MCC), opened in June 2008. Located at 28th and Q streets in the revitalized stockyards district, the 23,000-square-foot library is linked by a connector building to MCC’s South Omaha campus. The City and MCC split the cost of the facility, the City manages the library; MCC contributes staff.
