All faiths are welcomed in Greater Omaha.

When Omaha became a city in 1854, a Methodist clergyman preached the city’s first sermon. Two years later, the first church in the Nebraska territory was built, a Catholic Church in Omaha.

Since then the city has opened its arms to a multitude of religious traditions and denominations.

Large churches such as Westside, Trinity, Brookside and Christ Community offer a variety of worship services.

Omaha’s approximately 5,000 Muslims attend the Islamic Center.

The Salem Baptist Church in North Omaha features the nationally-renowned Voices of Victory choir.

The Hindu Temple of Omaha has been serving area members of the Hindu faith since 1993.

The agencies of the Jewish Federation of Omaha provide programs for the Jewish community. The world’s largest Jewish youth group, the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, was founded in Omaha.

Buddhists gather at the Nebraska Zen Center, a Soto Zen Buddhist Temple established in 1975.

The 150-year history of Mormons in the Omaha area is on display at the Mormon Trail Center, which is open to the public. Exhibits show the hardships faced by thousands of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who spent the winter of 1846 to 1847 here in the encampment they called Winter Quarters.
