The legends are coming to Omaha Aug. 1-4, 2013, with clubs, caddies and the global media in tow. The historic Omaha Country Club will host the U.S. Senior Open, the club’s first-ever United States Golf Association Championship. Superstars Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Couples, Greg Norman, Kenny Perry and Vijay Singh are among those who will be eligible to play.
Omaha Country Club completed course renovations and enhancements in 2006. The changes added length while complementing the course’s original design and 1951 redesign. “The club’s expenditure of approximately $4 million on its golf course renovation brought the course up to national championship standards,” said Omaha Country Club member Patrick Duffy who chaired the local organizing committee. “Omaha Country Club is also blessed with outstanding facilities including a spacious clubhouse, expansive grounds and adjoining farm land.
“Nebraska has a strong track record for governmental, corporate, community and volunteer support for sporting events, which the USGA weighed in its selection process.”
And, while a Calcavecchia, Couples or Perry could go home with prize money, plenty of green will stay in Omaha and Nebraska. More than 150,000 spectators and 3,000 volunteers are expected to gather from all 50 states and around the globe. Based on championships held in neighboring states, the USGA projects an economic impact of more than $30 million to the Nebraska economy.
The Senior Open will be covered by 500 media outlets and broadcast to more than 50 countries, including 16 hours of live television coverage on ESPN and NBC Sports.
