The Cheyenne County Community Center is the region’s most significant achievement for recreation and physical fitness. This 44,000 sq. ft., $3 million facility is situated in the middle of over 100 acres of city owned recreational parks and ball fields, and is utilized to full advantage. Expansion is currently under way.
The center’s goal is to provide a facility that anyone can use to improve his or her personal well-being and happiness, at an affordable price. Fitness directors are available to assist with creating your own custom workout program.
Activities include basketball, volleyball, racquetball, handball, wallyball, weightlifting, indoor walking track and cardiovascular exercise. Adult and youth sports leagues are offered throughout the year, including baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, football and even cricket.
Senior activities include card games, dances, potluck dinners and stretching classes. In addition, meeting rooms provide a pleasant setting for social activities and youth functions.
A community swimming pool, tennis courts, ball fields, shooting park, soccer fields, ice skating rink, 18-hole public golf course, archery, bowling alley, indoor and outdoor volley ball courts, skate park, covered horseshoe courts, a new disc golf course, county fairgrounds, twin theater and a private fitness center are all part of the recreation scene in Cheyenne County.
Shooting enthusiasts will enjoy the recently established Sidney Shooting Park, where sporting clays, trap and archery ranges are available for both open and league activities at a very affordable price. This facility is open to the public, but shooters can also become a member for additional savings.
For the more daring, a Motocross track holds regular races in the summer, with races from Pee Wees to the Pro 250.
A four mile hiking, biking, walking trail is a very popular attraction in the community and is currently expanding. It spans from the I-80 corridor through the heart of the town ending at a point where the Sidney-Deadwood Trail once took freighters to the Black Hills gold fields. In fact, it bears its historic name – Sidney-Deadwood Walking Path. Exercise stations and resting areas dot the trail.
Considered one of the top courses in Nebraska, the scenic 18-hole Hillside Golf Course is situated in rugged terrain with lush greens and fairways that will challenge golfers to play their best, or enjoy the scenery. This public course, wrapped around a rocky canyon with vistas that can’t be ignored, has a new clubhouse that was built in a joint public/private venture partnership, and opened in the fall of 2005. You’ll enjoy all the amenities, with a pro shop, 19th hole and restaurant that are also open for lunch and dinner. It’s a course that rewards good shot placement, yet can be enjoyed by novices as well as seasoned players. In 2006, a record amount of play, exceeding 18,000 rounds, was recorded.
