Government
While the more than 500-square-mile Lake Tahoe Basin functions as one enclosed watershed, the area has numerous local, regional and state political boundaries. The California-Nevada state line runs through the Lake. Two counties and one city reside on the California side, with three counties on the Nevada side.
To help coordinate planning while emphasizing environmental protection of the Lake and management of forest lands, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was created in 1969 as the result of a compact approved by both states and the United States Congress.
The resulting governmental structure is a delicate balancing act between local control and centralized regional oversight along with private property rights and environmental considerations.
Local governments provide basic services such as police and fire protection, public schools, water and sewer service and transportation. While TRPA has the authority over land use planning matters throughout the Basin, most local jurisdictions handle routine permitting locally through an operating agreement with the agency.
The South Shore includes Meyers to Emerald Bay in El Dorado County, CA, the city of South Lake Tahoe, CA, and the Stateline area out to Cave Rock along the East Shore of Douglas County, NV, to be a part of the community. This area is estimated to have a year-round population of 42,000.
