FACTS ABOUT CLAREMONT

• Many community efforts and events are made possible through a strong force of dedicated volunteers.

• Claremont’s high level of community spirit is evidenced by the greatest level of contributions ever raised in a New Hampshire community toward the Main Street Claremont revitalization program.

• The Stevens High School Alumni Association, with approximately 8,000 members, is the oldest active association of its kind in the United States.graphic

• As one of the nation’s most intact nineteenth century districts, Claremont’s downtown was the first Multiple Use Resource District (Historic District) to be added to the National Register of Historic Places.

• Claremont is home to the oldest Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches in New Hampshire, Old St. Mary and Union Episcopal; both are still in use.

• A variety of ethnic cultures, prevalent in Claremont’s historical citizenry, continue today through several places of worship within the community.

If you’re interested in history, the outdoors, the arts, or sports, you’ve come to the right place. The city of Claremont is located in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley on the New Hampshire-Vermont border. The Greater Claremont region is as rural or as urban as you want it to be. Agriculture still plays a major role in Sullivan County life, and the landscape in and around Claremont features heavily wooded hills and lakes, with streams and rivers that support an abundant variety of wildlife. The spectacular backdrop of Mount Ascutney serves as a constant reminder that Claremont is someplace special, yet you’re just a two hour drive from the bright lights of Boston, three hours from romantic Montreal, and four-and-a-half hours from New York City.

Cornish

Located just north of Claremont and bordering the Connecticut River, picturesque Cornish is home to the historic Cornish-Windsor Bridge, distinguished as the longest covered bridge in the United States. With a population of 1600, the quiet town is governed by a three-person board of selectmen.

The Augustus Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site is renowned for its fine display of the nineteenth-century sculptor’s pieces. The impeccable grounds of the Saint-Gaudens home offer a beautiful setting for weddings and weekly summer concerts.

Every third weekend in August, more than 15,000 people attend the Cornish Fair, Sullivan County’s largest agricultural fair. The 3-day event offers an opportunity for thousands of 4-H youngsters to participate in a variety of exhibitions; fairgoers also enjoy rides and shows typical of an old-fashioned county fair.
