History

The 24,000-acre township of Claremont was granted on October 26, 1764. The name Claremont comes from the county seat of Lord Clive, an English general who was considered the founder of the British Empire in India.

Brick was the building material of choice when Claremont’s historic downtown took root in the 1800’s, and except for the paved streets, the downtown looks much as it did 100 years ago. In fact, the downtown is a National Historic District, and several of the buildings are on the National Historic Register. The centerpiece of downtown Claremont is undoubtedly the historic Claremont Opera House, located upstairs in City Hall, and acoustically considered "one of the best facilities" in all of New England. Since opening its doors over one hundred years ago, the Opera House has showcased great graphic performances in dance, theater and music.
