Swift, reliable access to quality healthcare is critical to businesses and residents alike. Dover has been home to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital since it was founded in 1906. The hospital is the largest in the New Hampshire and Southern Maine Seacoast region, with a progressive medical staff, skilled nurses, and other employees providing a full array of services, as well as a number of specialty programs and facilities.

The hospital’s Seacoast Cancer Center serves patients within a 50-mile or greater radius and features a simulator unit, providing convenient high-quality cancer care in one location. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital consistently has demonstrated its commitment to the health profession and the community through the numerous healthy lifestyle programs that it provides for children and adults throughout the Seacoast.

The Avis Goodwin Community Health Center also provides invaluable services to the community, including health and wellness programs and education, prenatal through senior-focused comprehensive healthcare services, diabetes treatment programs, dental services, and much more. For the insured as well as the uninsured, this facility has received many honors for the quality of its services.

A number of specialty services are located in Dover, including Dover Pediatric, Dover Foot Specialty Center, Coastal Neurology Services, Great Bay Neurosurgical Association, Garrison Women’s Health, and Dover Women’s Health. The professional staffs at these health centers are committed to meeting the healthcare needs of the greater Dover community.

The greater Dover area also offers an array of health services for employers. Occupational Health Services specializes in workplace wellness, work-related physicals, injury management, and physical therapy. Downtown Dover’s recreation complex, located in Henry Law Park, consists of Butterfield Gym and a year-round indoor pool. The gym features a regulation basketball court, two fully equipped exercise rooms, a boxing loft, and a teen center. The center offers several recreational programs as well as an outdoor playground and picnic area. The Rotary Club of Dover was instrumental in the building of the adjacent Rotary Arts Pavilion, an exceptional and popular venue for concerts and productions.

The City of Dover’s Guppey Park features a 50-meter outdoor pool named for Dover’s Jenny Thompson, one of the top U.S. Olympic swimmers of all time. Also within the park is the year-round Dover Arena, home to a youth hockey program and the Great Bay Skating Club, which offers figure skating lessons for all ages. Guppey Park also features four lighted softball fields, volleyball courts, and a picnic pavilion.

The greater Dover community also offers a number of services for elders and others with disabilities. The VNA
provides nursing, home health aids, homemaker assistance rehab therapies, and a health clinic. The Wentworth Home, Wadleigh House, Saint Ann Healthcare Center, Langdon Place of Dover, and the Inn at Spruce Wood in Durham all offer a full continuum of retirement healthcare, independent living, support, and care of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. Community House Calls helps elders continue to live in their homes by providing everyday services.

Wentworth Homecare and Hospice provides nursing, health aide, and therapy services in the home, and Dover Rehab and Living Center is a nursing home specializing in medical and subacute care.
