Hanover and the Upper Valley straddle the New Hampshire–Vermont border in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, about 135 miles northwest of Boston. The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area an important crossroads of Northern New England. With the interstates so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox matinee at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal and still be home in time for dinner.
Lebanon Airport, just six miles south of Hanover, features short lines and daily round trips to Boston’s Logan Airport, where connections can be made across the country or around the globe. Charter flights also operate out of the modern facility that features on-site car rentals and free Wi-Fi to catch up on that last-minute business. An easy 80-minute drive brings you to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which has connections all over the United States and has become a popular alternative to Boston’s Logan Airport. Vermont’s Burlington International Airport is also about an hour and a half drive away.
For those who prefer the romance of the rails, Amtrak’s Vermonter offers daily service to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington from nearby White River Junction. Prefer not to get behind the wheel? Two bus lines offer the chance to catch up on reading or watch a movie on a trip to Boston or New York.
Thanks to a unique partnership among Hanover, Lebanon, Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Advance Transit offers free shuttle bus transportation from the shopping plazas of West Lebanon to Hanover and the College; from Canaan to Hartford village and between Hanover and Norwich.
Another green alternative at Dartmouth College is Zipcars for Universities, an initiative that offers rental cars on demand by the hour or day.
