Hanover and the Upper Valley straddle the New Hampshire-Vermont border in the Upper Connecticut River Valley about 135 miles northwest of Boston. The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area a crossroads of Northern New England. Rise early and you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox matinee at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal and still be back home in time for dinner.
If you are traveling afar, Lebanon Airport, just six miles south of Hanover, features short lines and daily round trips to New York (LaGuardia) and Philadelphia airports, as well as charter flight opportunities. An easy 80-minute drive brings you to Manchester Airport, which offers connections all over the United States and has become a popular alternative to Boston’s Logan Airport. Vermont’s Burlington Airport is also about an hour and a half drive away.
For those who prefer the romance of the rails, Amtrak’s Vermonter offers daily service to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington from nearby White River Junction. Prefer not to get behind the wheel? Two bus lines offer the chance to catch up on reading or watch a movie on a trip to Boston or New York.
Thanks to a unique partnership among Hanover, Lebanon, Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Advance Transit offers free shuttle bus transportation from the shopping plazas of West Lebanon to Hanover and the College; from Canaan to Hartford village and between Hanover and Norwich.
