Lebanon is blessed with two exceptional healthcare facilities within the city limits.
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is an integrated academic medical center located on a 225-acre campus. DHMC is made up of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital (founded in 1893), the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic (a network of more than 900 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont), Dartmouth Medical School (founded in 1797) and the Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center in White River Junction, Vermont.
DHMC employs over 6,000 people, and features a birthing pavilion, extensive research facilities, a trauma center and advanced response team (DHART), which provides emergency response and transport for patients in remote locations. In December 2003, The American Nurses Credentialing Center awarded DHMC its highly coveted Magnet status, recognition that the organization meets the highest standards of nursing excellence.
In addition to the many specialty services and programs—such as cardiology, infertility and reproductive medicine, orthopedics and vascular surgery—DHMC is home to New Hampshire's only children's hospital, ChaD (the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth) and Northern New England's premier cancer center, Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Norris Cotton Cancer Center is one of a select group of cancer centers nationwide to be designated comprehensive by the National Cancer Institute.
