The Center of the Upper Valley

business

Lebanon is the center of the Upper Valley’s labor market, providing 50 percent of the available jobs in the 24-town region. Over sixty percent of Lebanon residents are employed within the city limits. Nineteen percent work for non-profit organizations; sixty-one percent work for private for-profit organizations; 14 percent work for local, state or the federal government; and six percent are self-employed. The median household income is just over $42,000, and Lebanon boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 1.4 percent.

There are more than 600 employers in the Lebanon area, providing work for more than 18,000 employees. Greater than 90 percent of the work force has at least a high school diploma.

The primary sector of Lebanon’s economy is professional services, followed by retail/wholesale and then manufacturing. The city’s top eight employers are Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Hitchcock Clinic with 6000 employees, Timken Aerospace (ball and roller bearings) with 750, Tele Atlas (mapping) with 600, Alice Peck Day Hospital with 500, Lebanon School District with 450, Thermal Dynamics (plasma cutting torches) with 240, Fluent (software) with 200, and Stryker Biotech with 180.

The Economic Vision Statement for the city states “It is our vision to be an effective, efficient, and complete full service municipal government for the benefit of the taxpayers and citizens by nurturing existing business while encouraging retention and expansion of business; and to create new jobs, strengthen and expand the tax base by attracting clean new business while protecting our homeowners, residents, and the overall quality of life.”

Lebanon’s location near the junction of two major interstates, its access by rail or by air, and its close proximity to Dartmouth College help foster steady growth and ensure the success of its vision statement. As a result, Lebanon remains a healthy, prospering community with a dedicated workforce, and the Greater Lebanon Chamber of Commerce is going strong with an all-time membership high of 322.
