Welcome to the Lilac City!
On behalf of the citizens of Rochester, I welcome you to the Lilac City. Our City is an extraordinary place to work and live. And there are many reasons why this is true.
We are the largest city in the Seacoast of New Hampshire, but our community has a small hometown atmosphere. Rochester’s strength is our people, and their sense of volunteerism enhances our way of life. Our Opera House has been restored through volunteer efforts, and we host many exciting performances. Along with the Chamber, volunteers participate in many events — such as the Christmas Parade, the Lilac Festival and the Summer Festival.
Our City hosts many nationally recognized businesses as well — Thompson Center Arms, Eastern Propane, Albany International Techniweave, Rand Whitney to name a few. Our businesses thrive through the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of hard working employees. This I know to be true by the example our City staff shows through their dedication to a job well done. We are delighted that Wal-Mart is working on an expansion, the Ramada Inn has chosen Rochester as their home for their new Inn and Spinelli has decided to build an eight-screen theater.
We are pleased to have numerous recreational areas (the Rochester Common, Pickering Woods, Hanson Pines and our soon to be Riverwalk) for folks who enjoy the outdoors. We also house one the finest Ice Arena’s in the area and Roger Allen Park, home of many memorable little league games and the envy of many visiting teams.
Rochester is delighted to be 15th in the nation for the best quality of life and the 11th safest community in the United States. New Hampshire has also been ranked as the most liveable state in America.
Whether it’s business, the arts, sports or recreational activities — Rochester has it all! Come visit and enjoy our City with us!!
Sincerely,
David E. Walker
Mayor
I am pleased to welcome you to the City of Rochester. Rochester is an exciting and growing community that is positioned to become the new hub of activity in New Hampshire. Rochester is becoming the focal point of commercial, industrial and residential development. Within an hour’s travel time or less, you have access to the ocean, lakes, mountains, three major airports and — of course — our own Skyhaven General Aviation Airport in Rochester.
As I began writing this letter, I mentioned Rochester is a HUB. I feel it is important for everyone to know that Rochester is not only a “Gateway” to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, but it can and will become a center of business activities — as evidenced in the Wal-Mart Supercenter expansion, the New Ramada Inn and the eight-screen Spinelli Cinema.
Our downtown is beginning its transformation to a new era. CORE (Citizen Organization for Rochester Enhancement) is an enthusiastic group of property owners, business owners and citizens that are ready to shepherd development projects and bring Rochester back to the vibrant business community of the early 1900s. Riverwalk is one project that can ensure activity. We have the opportunity to connect the area from Hanson Pines to the Fairgrounds with a walkway through downtown. This will bring focus to the Cocheco River, and it is certainly a beautiful unique natural resource that can be utilized to make Rochester a desirable location.
Our newly restored Rochester Opera House has become recognized for outstanding arts and cultural events, and draws patrons from Rye and Portsmouth as well as the Lakes Region.
A new Learning Center, sponsored by the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Masons in Portsmouth-Dover Valley and the New Hampshire Consistory, opened in Rochester in mid-October. The center has a two fold mission: to provide tutoring services to children with a diagnosed language based learning disability or dyslexia and to train adults interested in becoming certified in The Orton-Gillingham Approach to teaching reading (a phonics based program that is visual, auditory and kinesthetic in its methodology).
Rochester truly is “The Place to Be”!
Very truly yours,
Robert D. Steele
