Location & Transportation

Situated on Absecon Island along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic City, New Jersey spans a mere 11.94 square miles in Atlantic County. Although the city encompasses a relatively small landmass, it is jam-packed with prime attractions and superb entertainment for all. Due to its draw as a major resort destination, providing quick and efficient transportation in and out of the greater Atlantic City region is especially important.

It’s a safe bet that your travel to Atlantic City will be managed by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA). SJTA reports more than 66 million (E-ZPass-accessible) vehicles, entering the Atlantic City area via the Atlantic City Expressway. Atlantic City is easily accessed through three main arterial highways—the Atlantic City Expressway, U.S. Route 30 (often referred to as the White Horse Pike) and U.S. Route 40/322 (also known as the Black Horse Pike). All three of these major east-west thoroughfares intersect with the extensive Garden State Parkway, which runs north-south through the state.

SJTA also manages strategically located, safe and well-maintained public parking surface lots with E-ZPass, as well as E-ZPass Plus-accessible garages within a network of public and private parking opportunities for those commuting by car. Atlantic City offers a number of strategically located parking lots and garages. For more information on these parking areas, visit www.atlanticcitynj.com/pdf/parking_map.pdf.

Getting around the city is made easy through the 13-passenger Jitney mini-buses, which travel throughout Atlantic City, and the Boardwalk’s popular Rolling Chairs. Both options are affordable and comfortable and provide great city views.

Atlantic City Rail Terminal

Further transportation is provided through the state’s principal public transportation network, New Jersey Transit. Advanced rail service can be utilized through this system at the Atlantic City Rail Terminal located within the Atlantic City Convention Center. This terminal links Atlantic City with Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor rail lines.

New Jersey Transit also offers local, intrastate and interstate bus commuting through the Atlantic City Bus Terminal. Additional carriers, including Greyhound, also offer routes through this terminal. For more information on New Jersey Transit schedules and fares, visit www.njtransit.com.

SJTA’s mission is to provide modern, safe and efficient transportation services to the traveling public and residents in southern New Jersey.

Local, regional, national and international air transportation is available through the Atlantic City International Airport, located a short distance from the city in nearby Egg Harbor Township. Overseen by SJTA, the airport sees about one million passengers a year, a number that is expected to greatly increase over the next few years. Due to the growing use of the airport, a major expansion and improvement project has been put in place. An E-ZPass-accessible parking garage, plus car rental, taxi, limousine and shuttle services are available through the airport. Air travelers can also reach Philadelphia International Airport within one hour via the Atlantic City Expressway.

SJTA provides quality transportation in and around southern New Jersey, from the roadway to the runway, supporting tourist services as well as through journey-to-work shuttle services and workforce development. Visit www.sjta.com for more information.
