Community Introduction

Decades after the invention of the light bulb and the tinkering of Thomas Edison, today Edison Township is one of the leading communities in New Jersey and living up to its namesake’s renowned reputation for invention and perseverance. Recognized for its many attributes and strengths, Money Magazine ranked Edison Township as the 35th most livable small city in America and the second in New Jersey. Forbes Magazine also named Edison the fourth-safest place to live in the U.S. The Township also offers the best community programs of its kind in civic, social and community-based activities. Steeped in history and pride, this great Township has expanded and grown into a vibrant business center with many offerings for individuals and businesses of all types, ethnicity and sizes.

Our new “Edison Profile” brings together the best and the brightest beacons of Edison and takes you on a tour of the wonderful community we call home. The commitment to the revitalization of Edison Township has promoted a sense of excitement as we embark on a new and ever changing globalized world.

Our town’s relative proximity to two major cities in the east and a half hour drive to the largest port on the east coast create an outstanding transportation hub. This has helped globalize Edison Township, enabling it to compete in both service and industrial arenas. Edison also provides the perfect environment to raise families away from the hustle and bustle of large cities – while still offering a short train ride to major cities and destinations on the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Line. With the Edison and the Metuchen train stations and the Metro Park train station in Woodbridge, we provide ample access to rail transportation for both work and leisure activities. Edison provides a light transit, fixed route to and from the Edison Train Station that accommodates some commuters.

Among Edison’s strongest attributes is its top performing schools, safe neighborhoods and diverse community of people and businesses. Edison offers housing to all income levels, from modern apartment complexes to large single-family homes, and is supported by outstanding day care centers and senior citizen housing facilities.

Edison provides a range of beautiful parks and recreational activities. Among the many parks offered, Roosevelt Park provides a beautiful place to enjoy a leisurely stroll around the lake or to take in a play at the open-air theater. This park offers a pristine 217 acres to the large crowds that assemble at the lake’s edges. Edison also is in close proximity to a record 50 golf courses, both public and private, making it ideal for the regular golfer to find a place to tee off and network with friends or colleagues. Your recreation opportunities, both passive and active, are abundant for all age groups. Visit www.edisonnj.org. For the nature and recreational enthusiasts, the Dismal Swamp, a National Wild Bird Refuge, offers sighting of nature’s creatures, ecology tour, vernal ponds, greenways walks and bike rides along the Raritan River. Edison-Metuchen YMCA and the Jewish Community Centers provide a full complement of family activities, child care, camps and entertainment.

The Edison Memorial Tower Corporation is building a state-of-the-art museum in the Township to memorialize the achievements of the Father of the Research and Development, Thomas Alva Edison. The new facility will document his work at his most famous lab in Menlo Park where he invented the phonograph and improved the incandescent light bulb.

The New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center offers a wide variety of event uses and services to area businesses, and trade organizations. With more than 150,000 square feet of exhibit space, it is New Jersey’s largest venue with the flexibility to host a myriad of both public and private events. From trade shows and conventions to banquets, special functions and meetings, this modern facility is ideally located only 30 minutes from New York City and 45 minutes from Philadelphia.

Edison boasts a top educational system – of which New Jersey Monthly Magazine ranked John P. Stevens High School an impressive 82nd in the State and Edison High School 155th. Edison offers 17 public schools, including two high schools, four middle schools and 11 elementary schools for an estimated 14,000 students. Additionally, there are eight private schools at the elementary and high school levels, including Wardlaw-Hartridge School and Rabbi Jacob Joseph, Spirit of Math (with its first school in America), Medical Technology Institute schools. Higher education opportunities exist through the Middlesex County College site in Edison, as well as Rutgers University in New Brunswick, a short 10-minute drive away. Edison also provides opportunities for vocational and technical training with the campuses of Lincoln Tech and the Edison Job Corps located right in the heart of our Township. Nearby institutions are Rabbi Jacob Joseph, DeVry and Ross universities, Georgian Court University, Berkeley, New Brunswick Theological, New Brunswick Technology Center, Robert Wood Johnson Medical, Strayer University, Everest, Rander Built and Sanford Brown Institute.

The diverse Edison culture is what sets it apart from all other towns. It includes musical, art, religion and cultures from all over the world. The Edison Arts Society hosts wonderful theatre plays and dances, including Plays in the Park, where a full amphitheatre with a professional cast performs in nearby Roosevelt Park. Music also abounds with the amazing performances of the Edison Symphony Orchestra, which consists of a 70-piece professional symphony. We are proud of our myriad of performing art venues, including Edison Valley Playhouse and several dance companies. Within a 15-minute drive, you can be downtown New Brunswick to see more live theatre.
