How to Travel

Middlesex County is in the center of it all, located in the middle of New Jersey and covering about 318 square miles. It lies in close proximity to New York City at only 25 miles away. It is only 50 miles from Philadelphia, about 195 miles from Washington D.C. and approximately 235 miles from Boston. Roadways are abundant to make traveling easy. Numerous state routes run throughout the county; Interstate 287 and U.S. Routes 1, 9, 1-9 and 130 also make it easy to ride the open road. The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway offer another great avenue.

Mass transit is available to make traveling more affordable and less stressful. New Jersey Transit operates a commuter rail network with 11 lines with three divisions. The transit also has bus service routes through New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia traveling both long and short distances. Several other bus companies also aid in travel. Suburban Transit serves commuters, charter busses and casino goers. Academy Bus transports commuters from New Jersey to midtown and downtown Manhattan. Their charters serve New Jersey, New York City, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Connecticut, Boston and Washington D.C. Amtrak serves the area with stations located in a number of the 25 municipalities.

Travel by air via the Newark Liberty International Airport. This airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and is just about 20 miles from central Middlesex County. Philadelphia International Airport is only 65 miles away and John F. Kennedy International Airport comes in a little closer at 50 miles.
