Monmouth County economy is driven by a diverse range of businesses, from individuals and small businesses to large corporations.
Traditional employments such as fishing, clamming and farming are still important contributors to the economy, and partnerships with local businesses and the community preserve these valuable resources.
The majority of Monmouth County’s businesses fit into the small to mid-range sizes, taking advantage of great location, a highly skilled workforce and a cooperative community.
As the county has grown and diversified, many larger businesses have moved to the area. Monmouth is on the cutting edge of emerging industries, and is home to cyberdistrics, aquaculture and high-tech incubators. Large employers such as AT&T, Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs have opened locations in Monmouth.
Two military operations, Fort Monmouth Army Installation in Eatontown and Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo and Colts Neck are among the area’s top employers.
A number of business and economic development centers provide resources to potential and existing businesses in the community, including the NJ Small Business Development Centers, SCORE and representatives of the NJ Commerce and Economic Growth Commission and Monmouth County Economic Office of Development & Tourism. The Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce guides the development of the community’s industries.
