Transportation

An extensive network of highways joins the North Essex area to a host of nearby cities and towns. Nine major highways course their way through or near the North Essex area. Interstates 80 and 280 and US Highway 46 diverge from the west, drawing traffic to the north and south of residential areas. State Route 23 also affords easy access to points throughout the county. With the excellent highways virtually surrounding the North Essex area, commuters and commercial traffic can flow easily to major metropolitan destinations.

Extensive rail and bus service provided by New Jersey Transit brings commuters to Newark’s Penn Station. New York is just a short 12-minute ride from downtown Newark via PATH trains. Midtown Direct, a new rail line which was launched in 2001, has added more convenience for commuters. Montclair service also includes connections for students at Montclair State University as well as baseball fans at the Yogi Berra Stadium. Amtrak provides high-speed Metroliner and Amcoach service to Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Boston via the Northeast Corridor.

DeCamp Bus Lines transports commuters from convenient locations in Montclair, The Caldwells, Roseland, Cedar Grove and Verona. Senior transport buses are available in the Roseland/Caldwell area.

John F. Kennedy International Airport, one of the world’s largest air terminals, and a true gateway to the world, is less than an hour’s drive. Nearby Newark International Airport, once the world’s busiest commercial airport, offers alternatives to New York’s busy JFK. With an expanded terminal and improved access, many travelers choose the convenience of Newark. Essex County Airport, located within one mile of Interstate 80 and Route 46 in Fairfield, is a general aviation airport, and the second busiest of its kind in New Jersey. A recent $20 million improvement project included a new FAA tower and general aviation terminal.
