The Essex County Park System includes thousands of acres of beautiful parks and nature preserves and is one of the oldest park systems in the country. Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell and Verona Park in Verona offer spectacular natural areas for hiking and biking, as well as ponds for fishing and ice skating. West Essex Park in Roseland winds for six miles along the Passaic River with 1,360 acres of wetlands and preserves. It is also home to the Center for Environmental Studies. Montclair residents enjoy outdoor activities in a variety of parks as well.
High-quality competitive sports programs, supervised by dedicated volunteers, athletic camps and training facilities bring opportunities to learn fundamentals and advanced skills to hundreds of young athletes. Soccer, baseball, softball and field hockey enjoy considerable support among local families and resident sport fans.

Essex Fells Country Club, Green Brook Country Club, Montclair Golf Club, and Mountain Ridge Country Club are private institutions that offer challenging play and attractive clubhouse facilities. Fernwood Golf Club in Roseland is available for anyone wishing to enjoy a manageable par 3 course. The Essex County Golf Driving Range and mini golf course are also available to the public.
Skaters of all ages and abilities can enjoy a spin around the ice during Public Skating Sessions or learn how to skate during Group Instruction Classes at Essex County’s South Mountain Arena in nearby West Orange or at Floyd Hall Arena in Montclair.
