Recreation
Essex County Parks, one of the oldest county park systems in the country, oversees the maintenance of more than 6,000 acres of parkland and open spaces and more than 140 facilities including three golf courses, Turtle Back Zoo and the Codey Arena. Picnic areas, trails, waterways for fishing and boating, playgrounds, and athletic fields and courts are some of the amenities found through the many park sites in North Essex County.
Among the system’s larger park sites in North Essex are Becker Park in Roseland, Brookdale Park in Montclair, Mills Reservation and Hilltop Reservation. The 284-acre Hilltop Reservation is the most recent addition to the system and features hiking trails and a wildlife refuge. West Essex Park in Roseland is home to the Essex County Environmental Center, a modern facility that opened in May 2005.
Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell and Essex Fells is a historic site that was established in the early 1910s and named for President Grover Cleveland. The park is equipped with walking/running paths, a pond, a tot lot, athletic fields and courts, and a picnic grove. Verona Park in Verona is a further prominent park site, with a history reaching back to the 1800s. Distinguishing features of Verona Park include a 13-acre lake and a modern boathouse, playground equipment, athletic fields and courts, a 1.2-mile fitness course, and plenty of spaces utilized for local events.
Essex County Parks, along with the individual Park & Recreation departments of North Essex communities, provide residents with a calendar year full of recreation programs and community-wide events. The communities are also filled with a variety of athletic organizations and camps for sports such as soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey and many others. A multitude of community recreation centers, swimming pools and facilities such as the Floyd Hall Arena in Montclair round out the leisure options in North Essex.
