Ocean City Introduction

travel

It’s that first breezy hint of the salt air as you come over the bridge and into Ocean City. Or maybe it’s the sight of the back bays with their amazingly green marshes, filled with jet-skis, sailboats and motorboats that does it. Or even still, maybe it’s that feeling when your toes curl under the warm, smooth sand and are tickled by the cresting waves as they rush onto the shore. Whatever it is for you that makes your lips slide up into that first, “I’m-at-the-beach” smile, we’re sure it’s memorable and unique.

That’s what living in Ocean City, NJ is: a string of fantastic, smile-worthy memories that are hard to top. Life on the edge of the United States of America is not to be taken lightly. It’s to be taken with a mellow, grain of — no, not salt, you’re by the beach now — a grain of sand. After all, that is why people move to the New Jersey shore, to get away from the stressful, hectic pace of the big city and its traffic, pollution, big buildings and did we mention traffic?

Days seem to pass by slower here with a much higher quality of life. The air is clean and fresh, the shore line is peaceful and the crowds, well, they just aren’t comparable to the ones found in big cities. Life by the shore is simply fabulous and brings you back to an era when kids’ laughter and ringing bike bells filled the streets. Yes, days definitely pass by slower here.

We all need a good balance though, and perhaps one of the best things about Ocean City’s location is its proximity to the big cities. Three to be exact — New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. And don’t forget Atlantic City, which is a mere nine miles away. So, if you need to be in any of these cities, you can be there in no time. You’d never know how close you were though, when you’re lying on the beach with the ocean roaring to a whimper next to your bare feet.

Ocean City has eight miles of smooth, sandy shores that hug the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches are the perfect width and the shoreline has an even-sloped bottom so children and adults alike can swim safely and comfortably — and swim you will. The Gulf of Mexico brings warm currents up the coast, making Ocean City’s situation a perfect place to swim throughout the summer months.

And speaking of warm, the coastal location of Ocean City brings even temperatures all year long. Not too cold, not too hot during all four seasons. The average winter temperature is 43 degrees, in spring it’s a refreshing 60 degrees and in summer it’s a warm 80 degrees. The fall brings in mid-50s, and it just happens to be, arguably, the greatest time of the year to be at the seashore. The beaches are yours for the taking — the sky is a jewel blue, the sun is warm, and the wind is gentle — head on out any time of day with your hoody sweatshirt, shorts, and a good book and it’s like heaven on earth.

There’s no mistaking it — we are all here for the beach and the ocean, in every way shape or form — all 15,000 of us that are year-round residents and 150,000 that visit each summer. The people and the ocean is what gives our city its name and personality. Ocean City is just that — a city by the ocean, offering a calmer, more peaceful life yet not sacrificing big city pleasures like fine dining, amusements, quality schools, and hospitals. And remember, those big cities are only a short distance away.

This is a community full of people who love to call Ocean City home and are proud to say they live here. These are your neighbors, the people who you’ll say hello to on the beach, in the playgrounds, or on the tennis courts. And they’re all here to say, “welcome.”
