Ocean City has many different ways to learn, seek some culture, and have a good time for all its citizens and tourists — yet within just a few minutes drive are several other attractions.
Head south down Route 9 and you’ll come to one of the pride and joys of the area, The Cape May County Park and Zoo. It’s open every single day (except Christmas) for the public to come and enjoy its untouched beauty and amazing wildlife. There is a boardwalk that runs through the natural habitats, keeping you close enough so you can see the zebra and giraffe run at full speeds but not be in any danger. Best of all, this park is open admission—there is no charge to enter, only a small donation box at the entrance.
Another 15-minute drive south and you are at the end of New Jersey and in the small town of Cape May. It’s in neighboring Cape May Point that you’ll find one of two local lighthouses (the other, north in Absecon) standing tall over the shores.
Climb the 218 narrow, windy steps to the top of the lighthouse and be rewarded by the amazing far reaches you’ll be able to see on the lookout. You can easily spend the day seeing what Cape May and its neighboring communities have to offer. There are five-star restaurants, loads of birding opportunities (Cape May is right smack in the migratory path for most birds), and fabulous boutiques along the streets.
For a glimpse into the past, spend a few hours at Historic Cold Spring Village. The Village is a representation of what life used to be in the past. There are events all summer long but you can go anytime to see workers and townspeople in character dress, and wander through numerous buildings all as they were 150 years ago.
Right across the Delaware Bay off the end of New Jersey is Lewes, Delaware. You can hop on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and in a little over an hour, be in another state. When you arrive, you’re treated to tons of outlets, eateries, and even a state park.
North of Ocean City are several other attractions like Historic Gardner’s Basin and Ocean Life Center where there are over 100 species of fish and water mammals, the home of the Atlantic City Surf, our own local minor league baseball team, The Atlantic City Historical Museum, and Lucy the Elephant, a giant colorful elephant rising six stories above the ground, that houses a museum and gift shop.
All these area attractions, combined with everything Ocean City has to offer equal a never-ending supply of culture, nature, and entertainment for you and your family.
