
When you wake up in Ocean City and the air is just right with a nice cool breeze, it’s hard to stay indoors for too long.
There are bikers, joggers, runners, and walkers on almost every street and, naturally, the beach and boardwalk. You can have bikes on the boards until 11 a.m. every morning. Biking the two and a half mile stretch is a great way to get exercise and a nice, fresh way start to your morning. There are numerous places to rent bikes along the entrances to the boardwalk.
Sports abound on the island and most of them are accessible to anyone that has the equipment. There are public basketball courts and tennis courts and even a public golf course. If you’re into water sports, head down to the bay and you’ll find sailing, boating, kayaking and jet-skiing. Head to the ocean with your surfboard and ride some waves, or paddle out with an ocean kayak.
Corson’s Inlet State Park at the south end of Ocean City has 350 acres of great hiking trails, saltwater fishing, and crabbing. It’s an extremely popular stretch of sand in the summertime. Over the bridge is the Strathmere natural area, which provides a safe environment for the endangered Piping Plover, the Least Tern, and black skimmers. There are numerous other species of shorebirds and waterfowl that can be found here.
Ocean City has its own 12-hole, par 3 golf course right along Bay Avenue next to the Airport. There are 25 additional courses in the surrounding areas and most of them are open to the public.
The Cape May National Golf Club was said to be “one of the best eighteen holes in the Mid-Atlantic Region,” by Tee Time Magazine. Harbor Pines Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township just gained Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Status, making it one of just 16 certified sanctuary courses in New Jersey and 475 courses worldwide. The Shore Gate Golf Club in nearby Ocean View was voted the best golf course in New Jersey for 2003 by Golf Digest and one of the best by Golf Magazine.
For the family, there is the Bayside Center, at 520 Bay Avenue. The building is a three-story 1910 residence on 1.9 acres that was restored in 1999 and looks straight across the bay waters. This is the place to come for an awe-inspiring sunset as well as a lifesaving museum, an environmental education center, and a display of classic ship models by master model maker Stephen Hutsko. There are picnic tables, shade pavilions, docks, restroom facilities, and a butterfly garden.
The Aquatic and Fitness Center of Ocean City is a great way to meet people and get your exercise. There is a state-of the-art gym and a huge 25-meter swimming pool and racquetball courts and best of all, a friendly staff waiting to help you with your needs.
