The Old Bridge Township Department of Parks and Recreation is committed to providing active recreation opportunities for residents of all ages. The Township has acquired more than 1,500 acres of open space over the past 30 years. Over 300 acres have been developed into active parks, with the assistance of more than $12 million of New Jersey Green and Blue Acres acquisition and development grants, as well as over $5 million of New Jersey Green Acres low-interest loans. Old Bridge currently has one of the largest inventories of municipal open space in the state of New Jersey.
The department maintains several parks and facilities totaling more than 300 acres. Notable sites include Pension Road Fields, County Park, Mannino Park, Laurence Harbor Waterfront Park, Veteran’s Park, Ticetown Fields, Geick Park, Central Park Playground, Raritan Bayfront and Cliffwood Beach. Lighted baseball and softball fields, lighted sand volleyball, basketball courts, bocce and shuffleboard courts can be found at Geick Park, which is also home to Camp ROBIN. Camp ROBIN supplies therapeutic recreation programs for special needs citizens. The John Piccolo Ice Arena located at the municipal complex is also a great place for recreational opportunities from Sept. 1 to April 1.
In addition to these facilities, the Department of Parks and Recreation sponsors an active senior program at the George Bush Senior Citizen Center. The center provides information, referrals and senior social services; creates a caring and nurturing environment; encourages interests, creativity and artistic expression; offers a support system for seniors to lead active and independent lives; allows seniors to make connections within the community; and promotes the celebration of life through physical and mental well-being. The center operates a routed transportation service for seniors aged 60 years and over, provides programs on health and wellness, education topics, socialization, passive and active recreation, music, dance and choral programs. The center also can provide information and referrals on local, county, state and federal programs.
Avid golfers in the area don’t have to travel far to enjoy their favorite sport. Glenwood Country Club, “New Jersey’s Best Kept Secret,” is an 18-hole championship golf course designed by prolific golf course architect Hal Purdy. An extensive $2.3 million makeover to all 18 holes created a finely manicured “shot makers” course, which plays more than 7,000 yards from the back tees, as well as a completely renovated practice range. The Golf Shop features an extensive collection of top-of-the-line brands and equipment rentals, while the Club House offers locker rooms and the 19th Hole Grill.
The Old Bridge YMCA, located at the entrance of Mannino Park, is a state-of-the-art facility. As a branch of the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, the Old Bridge YMCA has greatly expanded the recreational opportunities for area residents. The YMCA features a brand new wellness center, whirlpool, sauna/steam room, elliptical trainers, cardio equipment, treadmills, Stairmasters, bicycles, a free weight area, group exercise and swim classes, scuba and snorkeling classes and much, much more!
