We’re Known for Our Agricultural Resources…
Agriculture is still an economic force in this region. When people call
New Jersey the Garden State, it’s often Warren County to which they’re
referring. Few New Jersey counties are larger, and only two have fewer
people, leaving Warren County’s fertile farmland available to grow
some of the region’s finest produce, trees, flowers, and other nursery
items.
The area fields are alive with industrious people, self-picking strawberries
in spring, apples in late summer, pumpkins in autumn and evergreens in
winter. There are also vast fields of corn, tomatoes, beans, peppers and
more, available to enterprising pickers, or at roadside stands, or in
local supermarkets. High quality soil, much of it farmed in former swamplands
and river floodplains, makes Warren County’s produce memorably delicious.
Not all agricultural products are grown because they’re edible,
however, which is why people visit from throughout the tri-state region
year-round to fulfill their decorating needs, picking pumpkins in October
and cutting Christmas trees in December. There are still dairy and egg
farms as well, and a weekly livestock auction in Hackettstown, as Warren
County continues its contribution to the feeding of New Jersey’s
residents.
Every summer, the Warren County Farmers Fair in Harmony celebrates the
agricultural tradition, welcoming thousands of visitors for a week of
fun and games, fresh-baked pies, livestock exhibitions and more. Other
fairs and festivals throughout the county also revel in Warren County’s
agricultural roots, but then so does a simple drive down a quiet country
road, past hundreds of acres of eye-high corn.
