Worship

Religious worship has always been a significant part of life in Woodbridge, dating all the way back to its settlement in the mid-1660s. Several prominent houses of worship, constructed in the 1800s, still stand today as remnants of the township’s deep religious heritage.

Built upon a site established for worship in the 17th century, the First Presbyterian Church – known to residents today as “The Old White Church” – opened its doors in 1803. The adjacent cemetery, constructed in the 18th century, still hails as the resting place of some of Woodbridge’s original leading residents.

The Trinity Episcopal Church was established in 1860, though the parish was originally founded in 1698. Its cemetery has documented burials dating back to 1714, with the earliest stone reading the year 1750. Several years later, in 1874, the First Congregational Church was established by 30 members of the First Presbyterian Church hoping to return to the original ways of their predecessors from Massachusetts. The church, located along Barron Avenue, is still in use to this day.

As the years progressed, an increasingly diversified population sprung up in Woodbridge, leading the way to new religions and houses of worship. The township has maintained a spirited and dedicated religious community.
