Alamogordo is blessed with a highly trained and educated workforce with an average education level of 12.8 years. Unemployment rates here are generally lower than the state rates, and do not reflect the large variances of the state due to the steadying influence of Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range.
Holloman Air Force Base is Alamogordo's major employer and the cornerstone of its economy. The base is home to the 49th Fighter Wing, which operates and maintains the famous F-117 Stealth Fighters. These swallow-tailed black jets have become synonymous with the most advanced aerospace technology the United States has to offer. The Wing also is the host for the German Flying Training Center, which trains German Air Force aircrew in the Tornado jet aircraft. Holloman is also the location of the 46th Test Group, which tests many of the Department of Defense's latest technologies — from radars to weapons systems. The high-speed test track used by the 46th Test Group to test missiles holds the land speed record of over Mach 9.
1-800-flowers.com, a nationally recognized retailer of flowers and gifts, has located one of its four customer service centers in Alamogordo. 1-800-flowers.com employs over 700 customer service representatives in its new facility. Open for six years, it has established itself as a major private sector employer in the community.
The healthcare industry is also a major employer with over 500 employees. Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (GCRMC) is a joint venture with Holloman Air Force Base, and it's a model of Department of Defense and community collaboration. The hospital provides state-of-the-art facilities that range from cardiopulmonary care to a sleep studies unit. Alamogordo is very proud of this dynamic facility and the staff at GCRMC.
Tourism is an $18 million industry in Otero County. The flagships of the regions tourism destinations are the Lodge in Cloudcroft and the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. These two facilities employ well over 1,000 hospitality workers. The Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino has just undergone a multi-million dollar renovation — including work on the casino, the championship golf course, the world-class hunting operation, and the winter play area, Ski Apache. Otero County is also famous for the pistachio groves and wineries, which attract thousands of visitors each year to taste local products grown in the Tularosa Basin.
Filmmakers have long been taking advantage of the pristine beauty of the White Sands, the desert scenery, as well as the high-mountain streams and forests as backdrops for modeling shoots, TV movies and full length feature films. Last year, cast and crewmembers from Dream Works-Paramount Pictures were in the area for months as they shot a major portion of the Transformers movie. Not only did they find many of the services they required right in Otero County, they incorporated local structures for locations, found "extras" and were also made welcome on the local military bases.
The newest industry in town is Marietta Biscuit Company, Inc. By renovating an old manufacturing plant, this project is not only providing a face lift to an old building, but they are providing new opportunities for new types of jobs in Otero County. Once in full operation, this will be one of the largest and highest producing facilities in the southwest.
