Alamogordo is a full-service community with approximately 340 full-time employees. The Department of Public Safety, which provides both police and fire services through a cross-trained police/fire staff, is the largest department with 112 employees. Alamogordo is proud of having the lowest crime rate in New Mexico for a city over 20,000. The city has been recognized nationally for its local Keep Alamogordo Beautiful program and its water conservation programs. The city was founded as a railroad town in 1898 as a water and timber stop for the railroad, but now is a dynamic city that is the home to the New Mexico Museum of Space History and Holloman Air Force Base.
